When I first found out my Dad had cancer, I did so much research to try to find the best resources that might be able to help him. My background is as a library technician so compiling resources is just how we roll! Knowledge empowers us and helps us feel a little more in control. There’s always new things to try and different approaches to explore. Plant support through nutrition and herbs + lifestyle factors are mostly what’s included in these resources. I’m sharing the resources I liked just in case it will be useful to someone else too!
The Cancer Fighting Cookbook by Rebecca Katz with Mat Edelson
I love this book so much! It has different suggestions for meal plans based on symtoms or treatment and lots of suggestions for how to modify foods if Cancer treatment is affecting tastebuds. The book is really good at explaining why certain ingredients and approaches are used so you can apply it to everything else you’re making. For a sample, check out this amazing Magic Mineral Broth. I still make it for myself as it makes a wonderful replacement for water or anything that calls for storebought broth in recipes.
Healing Smoothies: 100 Research-Based Delicious Recipes that Provide Nutrition Support for Cancer Prevention and Recovery by Daniella Chase
Sometimes eating can be difficult for a variety of reasons so it was great to have all these delicious recipes for smoothies. There’s something for everyone! All the recipes were carefully written to provide support while also tasting amazing.
Herbal Medicine, Healing & Cancer by Donald Yance
This book is very comprehensive and disccuses nutritional and herbal options for treatment or for supplementing conventional treatment. This was the first book I read on cancer and it was great because it explains what cancer is and how it works, in order to get a better understanding of the processes happening in the body and how to support healing. This book was written in 1999 though so use it as a jumping board for research in case there is new information.
Talks from Botanical Medicine
Botanical Medicine has a wide variety of hebalism talks on cancer from many different herbalists. You can find the cancer topic area here. For understanding Cannabis specifially for theraputic uses, there is a package on Cannabis Theraputics which includes a talk on Cannabis and Cancer.
Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds by Kelly A. Turner
This book looks at the factors that have been associated with healing and beating the odds. It’s great to be aware of different factors that may positively impact recovery outside of conventional treatment. It’s nice to read some uplifting and hopeful books! The book goes through to explain each of the 9 factors that were found to positively impact remission so that you can incorporate them into your life. You can also find more resources + stories of people who beat the odds on the Radical Remission Project website.
This is a good place for looking for more information on other treatment ideas. You can search conventional treatments, a specific herb/treatment, or the cancer type to see what a variety of sources have found. The database links to scientific research papers and other resources. You can find the website here. Of course, before trying anything new, it’s best to work with your doctor to make sure nothing will affect treatments you’re already recieving.
